If you are living a stressful life and want to actually start living, I have some resolutions for the New Year that you can make to start living a happier, more fulfilling life.

Let’s be serious, it’s no fun to live in a constant state of stress. Use the New Year to start eliminating stress and bringing more joy into your life.

  1. Spend more time with friends and family.

    Friends and family should be the be-all, end-all in your life. Making money, sustaining your life, and having hobbies are all great and noble pursuits, but real happiness comes from fulfilling relationships. Make a commitment in the New Year to work on your most important relationships and make them more fulfilling. Do something as a group. Go backyard camping, have dinner, watch a movie, etc.

  1. Fit in fitness.

    Are you walking enough? Exercising enough? Most busy people do not make fitness a priority, when in reality, it can make them far more productive. Just taking half an hour, every day, to do something active can seriously improve your mood, productivity, and even boost your energy levels throughout the day. Make a point to fit in fitness this next year, whether you get outside or just walk on a treadmill in your own home.

  1. Eat healthy.

    Food and stress are heavily connected. If you’re not eating right, your body is going to be more stressed. Eating junk food, while it might feel good in the moment, is terrible in the long term.  If you must indulge in comfort foods, these portion control bowls will help you stay within acceptable limits. Making a resolution to eat healthier and to make cooking a less stressful task, is a great way to improve your life.

  1. Embrace relaxation techniques.

    If you’re not already actively trying to reduce your stress, now is the time to make a commitment to start. Instead of letting stress control your life, control your stress with a relaxation technique that works for you.

  1. Enjoy life more and stress less.

    You can make the decision to stress less and to live a more enjoyable life. You may need to eliminate some bad habits and implement some new ones, but it is possible.

  1. Better time management.

    When it comes to stress management for women, this is one of the most important things a woman can do. Lacking time is one of the number one stressors among busy women. How do you find time to work and take care of your home and family? Finding ways to manage your time  more effectively as a part of your New Year’s resolutions can mean more time for the truly important things in life.

  1. Get out of debt.

    Financial stress is the most common and most detrimental kind of stress a woman can face. Taking actions to gain control of your finances during the next year can help eliminate the stress from your life.

  1. Learn something new or take up a hobby.

    Gaining a new skill can make you feel as accomplished and competent as you actually are. Pick a skill or hobby that will benefit your life and reduce stress. Gardening is a great example, but anything that makes you feel calm for a few moments during a hectic day, week, or month, is worth your time.

  1. Do something for others.

    Doing something for others is a great way to improve your own life. When you focus on the needs of someone else, you can forget about your own problems and stress for a few hours. Buy someone a great stress relief gift, volunteer at a homeless or animal shelter, or donate time or money to a great cause.

  2. Get organized.

    Clutter in your home and yard can make you feel stressed and overwhelmed. New Year’s is a great time to de-clutter your life. Get organized and throw out the things you don’t need. If you don’t have any storage in your backyard, invest in a storage shed to hide your trashcans, mower, or other yard tools. Get some filing cabinets and other storage for your business papers inside your home. Don’t let mess and clutter be another source of stress in the New Year!

  1. These are very useful tips. For the past few years I’ve been trying to do dieting resolutions, but I have never tried doing them in combination with relaxation goals. Maybe I can use them as a way to reward myself after exercising. I would love to do more volunteer work as well; it would be great to have a goal that benefits others more than myself. I really want to make a resolution to do more traveling this year, and of course reduce my debt so I can pay for the traveling, lol.

    1. Those are all great goals Jennifer. I would just suggest that you focus on one (1) for the next 30 days. Don’t try to do too much at once. That would lead to more stress. If you want to focus on more than one goal at a time (.e.g dieting goals, volunteering, travel) spread them out over the next three months. For instance, focus on your dieting goals in January, add some volunteer goals in February, and plan a spring weekend getaway for March. See how that works? Small changes lead to BIG impacts. Too many changes at once lead to burnout. Keep me posted on your progress. 🙂

  2. Stress can actually cause many health concerns especially as we age. I will try to get more sleep and reduce debt especially as I get closer to retirement.

    1. Hi Antionette, you are 100% right. Stress has earned the name “silent killer” for a reason. Making a goal to get more sleep and reduce debt as you get closer to retirement is definitely worthwhile. Just be as specific as possible, which makes goals more achievable. For instance, make a goal to go to bed by 10 PM every night! Or, make a goal to reduce your debt by $1000 in the next 6 months! The more specific the goal, the higher the level of success.

  3. These are some great resolutions! One of mine is to focus more on being present and enjoying the moment I am in, instead of getting so ahead of myself and constantly thinking about what is next.

    1. That’s a great one Jennifer. Taking one day at a time can help us feel more in control than constantly thinking about what is next, which could trigger worry, anxiety and stress. Planning for the future is important, but enjoying the present in equally important. It all comes down to balance! Balance is the key to happiness…in everything that we do.

  4. What a great list of resolutions, I want to do them all! I especially know that I need to spend more time with friends and family. I have a very demanding job that is constantly pulling my attention, and my presence, away from important time with friends and family. I know that there is nothing more refreshing for me than some quality time with my loved ones and I am going to resolve to not let anything get in the way of that. I also really need to eat healthier and exercise more. This will go really far to help me feel better and have more energy, it’s just so hard to do sometime. I love the portion control bowls, what an easy trick to help me eat better!

    1. Hi Lindsey, glad you enjoyed the list. You SHOULD do them all, just don’t try to do them all at once! So many women have a hard time balancing work and home life, you are not alone at all. Its a constant struggle, but its a battle you can win. It’s a battle we all NEED to win. Eating healthier can be as simple as replacing all sugary snacks with fruits. An apple, a pear, strawberries, pineapple and so much more. There is no shortage of fruits that can fill our sweet tooth. If you try to make too many changes at once, it will be very hard and un-doable! But if you start with small changes and build on that, you will be surprised at how much easier it can become. Those small changes quickly become a part of your new routine and you will gradually transform into a happier, healthier new YOU! P.s. The portion control bowls are AWESOME, aren’t they? 🙂

  5. One of my big New Years resolutions is to get organized! I recently had a baby, and with this wonderful addition we also got, you guessed it, mounds and mounds of baby stuff! I swear she has more belongings than my husband and I combined. Everything has moved so quickly that I didn’t realize until recently that there are so many things that do not have a home, so to speak, within my home. The result is chaos. I spent forty five minutes just this afternoon searching for something. I think it would save me time, and some sanity to get organized. Any tips?

    1. CONGRATULATIONS with the baby girl! Baby girls are so adorable, you can’t help but buy them stuff every time you go to the store, And I bet your friends and family buy her lots of stuff too!   6. I am making a resolution to give more to others. I know that sometimes when my troubles seem too overwhelming, giving to someone else that has more, or just different, needs than I do can put my own life into perspective and instantly helps me adjust my attitude. I am a nurse, and I know that my local red cross center could really use some help with their monthly blood drives. I am vowing right now to make volunteering for these events a regular part of my life this new year. Thank you for giving me this fantastic idea, Darlene!
