Stress Management Activities To Kick-Start Your Day

Starting off your day with activities to manage stress can make the rest of your day far, far less stressful.

As women professionals our demanding daily routines often leave us feeling hurried, harried, or just downright frazzled! I usually kick off my day with these easy activities:

Stress Management Activities #1-Make a To-Do List the Night Before

stress management activitiesBefore I go to bed, I sit down, pull out a piece of paper, and start making a list of what I absolutely need to get done tomorrow. I write down what I’d like to get done tomorrow, and even what I do not need to do tomorrow.

Why do this the night before?

Because making a to-do list on paper helps me think about the next day and organize my thoughts. That’s a better option, instead of worrying about them as I am trying to fall asleep.

You’ll sleep better—which means that you’ll have more energy for the activities you need to do tomorrow.

You’ll get more done, feel less stressed, and be much, much happier.

This task only takes a few minutes, so make it a part of your nightly routine.

Stress Management Activities #2-Get at Least Eight Hours of Sleep

If you are only sleeping six hours a night, you are not getting enough sleep.

When you are tired, your body is immediately more stressed.

This makes getting enough sleep one of the most important activities to manage stress on my list.

Don’t skimp on sleep. Do whatever you need to do to make more time in your life for sleep. Tweet This!

Swear off caffeine after two in the afternoon. Instead drink Rooibos tea, Chamomile tea, and Linden tea. And…banish electronic devices from the bedroom.

As often as you can, get at least eight hours of sleep.

Stress Management Activities #3-Drink a Large Glass of Water When You Wake Up

You will be dehydrated when you wake up, for the same reason that you are hungry when you wake up.

If you’ve gotten your eight hours of sleep, you will not have had anything to drink for eight hours. This stresses out your system and fogs your mind.

Drinking a large glass of  water when you wake up starts the hydration process. It also boosts your metabolism, energizing and stimulating you.

Whether you put a water bottle next to your bed or simply make it part of your to-do list (connecting your stress management activities so they bolster one another is always a good idea), make sure you are getting enough water, starting with a large glass, every single morning.

Stress Management Activities #4-Take a Walk

Starting your day off with exercise means that you will be more energized throughout the day. Tweet This!

Just like drinking a large glass of water, exercise revs up your metabolism. Not only will you find it easier to maintain your weight or even lose weight, you’ll simply find that you are less tired throughout the day.

A boosted metabolism burns the calories you intake more efficiently, so you utilize them better, for more energy.

Exercise has long been one of the best activities for managing stress, and kicking off your morning with it means a less stressful day!

Walking is also a great time to leave the devices at home and just be alone with your thoughts.

It’s a great opportunity to process emotions, make decisions, think about what you need to get done that day, and to reconnect with yourself.

If you do not like to walk alone, consider asking a friend to walk with you. If you have a dog, a morning walk will help it burn off their energy and will make it less anxious and excitable throughout the day.

Walking should be part of your daily routine, especially in the morning, when you can get a good dose of morning sun and the vitamin D that it produces.

Don’t think of it as just another thing you have to do—think of walking as an opportunity to really get in touch with yourself again.

Stress Management Activities #5-Have a Good Breakfast

Too many women professionals make the mistake of skipping breakfast, thinking that it will help them lose weight or thinking that they just do not have time to eat it.

I was guilty of that for years and I ended up paying a hefty price with my health!

If you skip breakfast, you will be counteracting all of the other great activities to manage stress you have already done.

Start by putting breakfast on your to-do list.

Think about what you want to eat the night before so you will make sure to plan time for yourself to make that meal. Take the time to eat it before you get up and start doing the rest of the things you need to do that day.

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day, so make it a priority, or you’ll find yourself stressed-out and tired.

  1. I did not know that we are dehydrated when we wake up and that drinking a glass of water first thing will give us a boost! How interesting! It makes total sense to me, and I wanted to tell you Darlene, that ever since I read this blog post I have been faithfully drinking a large glass of water first thing in the morning and I feel great! It has really helped me feel more energized as I go into my day. I love this blog on going back to the basics, such great reminders.

  2. Right now I am really struggling to have enough time in the day to accomplish everything that I need to get done! It seems like there is always more to do than there is time and I rush through trying to get to it all and fall into bed at night with so much undone. It is driving me crazy! What you were saying about making to-do lists the night before really rang home with me. I think this would help me feel more peaceful going into my day and to get more accomplished and to be more focused in what I do. I would also LOVE to start my day with exercise, right now the idea of getting in a workout almost seems luxurious because I do it so infrequently and I really enjoy it when I do. I know how important it is, but how do you find the time?

    1. Hi Stella, thanks for sharing. My to-do lists are life-savers. As for exercise, you don’t need a lot of time to exercise. If ten minutes is all you’ve got, then make that the best ten minutes. You can jump-rope for ten minutes or do strength training for ten minutes. Check out these 10-minute work-out Dvd’s. There’s bound to be one that’s just right for you. I am sure you can find 10 minutes in your day, can’t you?
